Our featured project for the Month of July is the new office for Shavano Park Family Dentistry which was designed and built for Dr. Allison Tran and is located at 4462 Lockhill Selma Road in the city of Shavano Park, TX just south of Loop 1604.

The building is located on a commercial lot of almost and acre fronting Lockhill Selma Road. The total building square footage is approximately 4600 s.f. with the Dental office occupying about 2800 s.f. There is another suite available for a future tenant in the building as well.

The interior of the office has a large patient waiting and reception area as well as business office, consult room, break area, lab/sterilization and 7 patient exam rooms. Due to the efficient use of the space two dentists along with hygienists and office staff can all work comfortably in the building at the same time while also being able to serve patients quickly and efficiently.

The site is nicely landscaped and the building exterior has two colors of stucco, an arched design motif, a large covered entry porch and a standing seam metal roof. Ample parking is provided at both the front and rear of the building.

Perry Dental Health

Perry Dental Health is a second floor interior finish out designed for Dr. Chris Perry in a retail space in the second phase of the mall. The interior space is approximately 3500 square feet and was built by Malitz Construction. It features a patient reception and waiting area that open onto a courtyard, hygiene and operatory rooms, lab, sterile room and an open area that can be used for lectures.

Perry Dental Health provides progressive family dental care, specializing in preventive dentistry, quality restoration and cosmetic dentistry. Perry Dental Health can provide its patients with cerec restorations, digital x-rays, diagnodent decay detection, along with a variety of other dental services. They can also provide massage rehabilitation therapy through their on site neuromuscular massage therapist Rachel Connor who specializes in therapeutic massage to assist in pain relief associated with headaches and TMJ related discomfort.

Steven Wood DDS

The offices for Steven Wood DDS is a 2400 s.f. dental facility located on N.W. Military Highway in San Antonio, Texas.  The exterior has stucco walls and a Spanish tile roof with a rough cedar trellis that frames the massive carved wood entry door.  It sits up and away from the road and is surrounded by many large live oak trees that were preserved as part of the landscaping for the project.As you enter the lobby you find yourself in a two storey space with plenty of natural light that comes in from large windows at the first level as well as smaller windows high up on the walls.  There are two reception windows with a large tropical fish tank in between them.  In addition, on display in the lobby area are Dr. Woods collection of woven tapestries and clothing from indigenous people of the Americas which make a stunning and interesting artistic presentation. The clinic itself has 4 operatories, a lab and steriliztion area as well administrative offices and other support spaces.  There is a staff work area and break room as well as doctor’s office and consult room along with mechanical room and storage rooms.

Robert James Pediodontics Office

The offices for Dr. Robert James Pediodontics practice is another of the projects completed by Stephen J. Kramer Architecture + Design in the Huebner Parke development.  Its’ exterior is similar in character, materials and color to the other buildings in the development using rock and stucco exterior with standing seam metal roof.  The building itself is a large two storey structure housing the Owner’s dental practice which specializes in the treatment of children. Located on the extreme edge of Salado Creek the foundation required extensive piers and bracing but allowed siting that gave it views to the creek that will remain unspoiled forever. The Owner has taken great pride in the landscaping of the site and has even provided bronze statues of children playing to add to the ambiance when you enter the clinic.  The interior of the building itself is designed and furnished to make both parents, children and staff comfortable.  Spaces are open and provide lots of natural light. In addition, Dr. James hired an artist to paint murals on all of the operatory walls, each with a different scene providing excitement and interest for his young patients.

Orthodontic Offices of Lynn Hurst

The orthodontic offices for Dr. Lynn Hurst are located in the Huebner Parke Development in San Antonio, Texas and are one of the seven project completed there by Stephen J. Kramer Architecture + Design. The building is a single storey contemporary stucco structure with standing seam metal roof that matches the overall style of the development. A second floor storage area was designed to take advantage of the ample attic space in the building. Because of the shared parking of the project and the common water pollution abatement pond, the actual lots in this development were extremely small and presented a formidable challenge when laying out the buildings. The project actually was able to accommodate a building of over 5000 s.f. on a site of approximately 10,000 s.f. The impressive part of this project was the building interior. Native limestone accents were used along with exposed heavy timber trusses to give it a warm Texas Hill Country atmosphere. The public areas such as the waiting room and the treatment bays have open ceilings and large windows to give the patients as well as the staff a very spacious environment with lots of natural light. Warm color and material selections complete the look giving the facility a very homey yet professional contemporary feel.

Colony Dental Associates

The project for Colony Dental Associates was one of the first dental offices completed by the firm. In addition to a dental clinic on the first floor it also houses a office for the psychology practice of the Dentist’s wife. The site provided adequate access, size and a view to a pond behind the building. The architectural control provided the main challenge in the design of this project. The material choices for the building were severely limited by the architectural control committee in the First Colony area where the building is located. The building walls could either be stucco or one of two approved brick selections. In addition, only one of two standing seam metal roof colors were allowed. In working with the Owner, we decided on the brick facade accented by arched windows and cast stone columns, window trim and a belt course to provide a classical contemporary looking exterior for the project. The interior of the dental office was arranged so that initially four operatories would be outfitted and used by the Owner but an additional four were provided on the opposite side of the building for future expansion. The facility has a spacious two story patient waiting area fronted by the granite reception counter. This building contains the highest quality materials including natural stones, faux painted walls, luxurious carpets, and custom built dental cabinetry. Technical innovations such as an inter-oral camera with video monitors for every operatory, digital x-ray, and medical gases piped to each chair insure that this facility will be the state of the art in dental care for many years to come.

The building for Blanco Family Dental practice was designed for Mary Higgins, DDS on a small site on Blanco Road in San Antonio. Site issues that were addressed in this project included having to fit the building, parking, and water pollution abatement pond on a small sloping site. The building is a 3170 s.f. single story facility with a combination of rock and stucco on the exterior. The roofing material is standing seam metal and the building has arched openings and windows as well as dormers on the roof to provide interest. The building interior accommodates the typical spaces for a small dental office including a waiting area, reception, desk, business office, a doctor’s office, lab and sterilization areas, as well as 7 operatories and other support spaces.

The Dental Clinic for Brent Hallum, DDS in Boerne, Texas provided a unique collaboration between the Owner, Stephen J. Kramer Architecture + Design as the architect of record and Unthank and Unthank a nationally recognized dental design specialist. The owner purchased a lot on N. Main Street in Boerne Texas, giving him a highly visible corner location in this bedroom community of San Antonio. As the local architect of record the responsibilities of our firm included all site plan issues as well as the exterior building shell. The dental design firm provided the interior layout as well as cabinet design and material and fixture selection.

Gottwald Dental Clinic

The unusually shaped site for this multi-building project provided the biggest challenge in the design of the facility. The L shape site was almost one acre in size, however, it had minimal frontage with narrow width and had many mature live Oak trees that the Owner wished to save. In addition it was over the Edwards Aquifer and required that an on site water quality pond be installed. To accommodate these factors as well as maximize the building area two buildings were designed. The first was approximately 4,000 s.f. and would contain the Owner’s dental office in one half and provide additional lease space in the other. The second building of approximately 2,000 s.f. was designed for another tenant. Fortunately the site sloped to the rear which allowed us to put the detention pond in the back. Parking was split, with a few spaces for clients in the front among the large oak trees and the majority behind the first building to be shared by both offices. The building at the front of the site was designed as a long narrow rectangle in order to allow access along one side to the rear parking area and second building. Stucco walls painted in a warm gold tone along with limestone accents and a standing seam metal roof comprise the exterior building materials. A front porch supported by wood columns runs along the front of the building and is accented by a three gables to give the building a contemporary Texas look. The second building uses similar materials, colors, and forms. The design of this project as well as it’s close proximity to a local high school has insured that it has been fully leased since shortly after construction.

The Smiles Dental Center was designed for a client wished to move an existing dental practice from a small lease space to new free standing clinic on Common Street in New Braunfels, Texas. It is one of three projects designed by Stephen J. Kramer Architecture + Design in this rapidly growing commercial area of the city. The building was sited allowing for staff parking in the rear, patient parking in the front, as well as an on site storm water runoff retention pond as required by the city of New Braunfels. Materials used include a traditional red/orance brick along with columns and an arched entry way. The first floor of the building provides six operatories on the perimeter arranged around a core of service areas consisting of the lab and sterilization areas along with the business office and reception area. Attic area was provided to utilize the space beneath the steeply pitched roof.

Offices for Jay Gibson Orthodontist

The offices for Jay Gibson is one of three dental projects designed for the McRoy at Oakwell building.  Dr. Gibson is also the building owner and wished to locate his space so that he could take advantage of the views to the west of the site, including a densely wooded trail and a natural water feature.  In order to accomplish this two treatment bays were located facing this view, one with three chairs for general use and a smaller semi-private area for treatment of adult patients.  The treatment bays utilize stained wood paneled sloping roofs to provide a warm open feeling that is accented by large expanse of glass.  The lab/sterilization area as well as the employee break room is directly off of the larger treatment bay to provide easy access.  In addition to the treatment areas, the office has an inviting patient waiting area with computer terminal, built-in fish tank and curio case to display a variety of interesting objects collected by Dr. Gibson over the years.  The doctor’s office is combined with a consult area so that first time patients can be diagnosed in a comfortable private setting.  In addition there is a video game room for kids, complete with gaming systems and black light decor.

The Monier Dental Clinic

The project was the first dental office completed by Stephen J. Kramer Architecture + Design.  It involved the complete renovation of an existing building that the Owner bought as a foreclosure property from the RTC.  The original building was an almost 3000 s.f., single story, wood framed structure with a flat roof.  The renovation involved removing all of the interior walls of project and reconstruction of a new pitched roof as well.  The remodeling transformed this 1960’s era building into a modern dental facility.  After gutting the interior of the structure the office was laid out such that four exam rooms were outfitted initially for use on one side and additional four left vacant on the opposite side for future expansion.  The doctor’s office and break area were located at the back of the building for privacy while the waiting and reception area were planned for the front of the building giving them easy access and visibility.  The interior of the building was reserved for the support areas such as lab, sterilization, and storage.  Within approximately two years of opening the clinic Dr. Monier had hired an additional dentist and outfitted the second group of exam rooms.  This project became a stepping stone for many other dental clinics for the firm.

This project consisted of approximately 1,200 s.f. of additional space as well as remodeling of an existing dental clinic in northwest San Antonio.  The challenges facing the design team as well as the Contractor and the building Owner for this project included utilization of the existing site and parking as well as phasing the construction work so that the existing clinic could remain operational through- out the construction.  The existing building materials were matched in the new addition, utilizing painted stucco walls and a painted wood mansard type roof.  The front side of the building however, was modified to give the building a more interesting and inviting feel.  A stepped parapet, metal canopies over the windows and doors, and ceramic tile accents were used to dress up the new facade.  Interior finishes, carpeting, tile, and paint colors were all changed to give the clinic a fresh new look as well.

Alliance Dental Center is a general dentistry facility designed in San Antonio, Texas.  The client purchased a one acre lot on Culebra road in northwest San Antonio and asked us to master plan the site for his building and an identical future building that could be developed later on.  The building exterior features cut Texas limestone rock veneer with a green standing seam metal roof and red trim.  The green tinted window glass completes the exterior look and gives the project a contemporary Texas style.  The building interior utilizes plenty of natural light to offer a bright cheerful atmosphere to the clients.

Melvin Shanley DDS

The facility for Melvin Shanley DDS  is located in San Antonio at the corner of Huebner Road and Moonlight Way.  The site is approximately 1 acre and was master planned for the dental office building consisting of Dr. Shanley’s space as well as a future lease space and for either one or two other buildings in the future.  All of the parking for the site was done as part of the first phase as was the water pollution abatement pond.  Dr. Shanley’s building is located towards the back of the site to allow the future building to take advantage of the Huebner Road frontage, making it more valuable to a potential buyer.  The building is a modern adaptation of a Texas Hill Country Style using limestone on the exterior with a standing seam metal roof.  The building itself is approximately 5,000 s.f. with half of that being the dental offices for Dr. Shanley.  The interior consist of waiting room, reception area, offices, sterilization area, lab, and 4 operatories, and hygiene rooms.
